Ecological Forecasting:
Forecasting Intertidal Body Temperatures - Short-term (7-day) and long-term (8-month) forecasts of mussel bed temperatures for worldwide locations.
Helmuth Lab Temperature Data - Database of temperatures recorded by biomimics (nicknamed "Robomussels") deployed in mussel beds. There are also temperature data from coral reef sites.
Useful Data and Statistical Resources: (Open Source)
R Project for Statistical Computing - stastical and graphics program that is used globally for scientific research.
Generic Mapping Tool - program for drawing maps of field sites and regions that can also display gridded data.
OSU Tidal Inversion Software - spatially continuous tidal predictions for worldwide locations. Regional models with higher spatial resolution are also included.
XTide - downloadable tide software that can be run on command line and directly in R. Includes tidal constituents and offsets for tidal stations in the United States and additional locations.
WWW Tide and Current Predictor - web version of XTide.
NASA JPL Horizons Software - ephemerides for solar system objects. This software can be used to determine time series of solar elevations for locations on Earth.
National Data Buoy Center - oceanic and atmospheric data from a large network of coastal and offshore buoys.
National Climatic Data Center - data from weather observation stations throughout the United States. Data are only free when you access the site from a ".edu" location.
NOAA Tides and Currents - includes measured tidal (water level) data for the United States. Harmonic constituents are derived from these data and used to make tidal predictions. (XTide uses these constituents for many sites.)
North American Regional Reanalysis - 32 km gridded climate data at 3-hour intervals for North America. The data on this website are downloadable in NetCDF format for the years 1979-2006.
NASA Ocean Data from Satellites - a web interface to download ocean temperature, height, wind, and current data from NASA satellites. Data output can be provided in several different formats including NetCDF. It is easy to overload the system so try downsizing temporal and spatial requests if you have trouble obtaining data.
NASA Data from Satellites - a web interface to download all types of satellite data including MODIS and ASTER land surface data.
Solar Radiation Budget Data - hourly solar and cloud fraction data from the GOES satellite for the years 1996 to the present.
